Everybody is familiar with the famous saying that “Prevention is better than the cure” This is even more important for the magnificent roosters we breed and care for. First of all, viral diseases are not treatable and the best and only way to prevent them is thru vaccinations. Most small breeders will not invest in vaccines thinking that these vaccines are expensive. This is a misconception and I would like to elaborate my point. Locally, the average cost for a NCD B1B1 and La Sota vaccine is P150. Being a small breeder and having only 10 roosters will entail a cost of P30 per bird for the use of both vaccines mentioned earlier.
When our roosters are hit by a respiratory disease we commonly give antibiotics for 5 to 7 days and the average cost for a good antibiotic will be P15 or a cost per bird of P75 for 5 days treatment.
This clearly shows that vaccines are still the best investment, not only because it is more cost effective,it is the best way of disease prevention. If the respiratory condition we gave as an example above was due to NCD virus, all the antibiotics we spent will be ineffective against the viral infection.
